Conflict in the Congo: Geopolitics of Plunder

(excerpt from Nile Bowie’s Congo’s M23 conflict: Rebellion or Resource War?) – It must be recognized that Kagame controls a vastly wealthy and mineral-rich area of eastern Congo – an area that has long been integrated into Rwanda’s economy – with total complicity from the United States. As Washington prepares to escalate its military presence throughout the African continent with AFRICOM, the United States Africa Command, what long-term objectives does Uncle Sam have in the Congo, considered the world’s most resource-rich nation? Washington is crusading against China’s export restrictions on minerals that are crucial components in the production of consumer electronics such as flat-screen televisions, smart phones, laptop batteries, and a host of other products. The US sees these Chinese export policies as a means of Beijing attempting to monopolize the mineral and rare earth market.

In a 2010 white paper entitled “Critical Raw Materials for the EU,” the European Commission cites the immediate need for reserve supplies of tantalum, cobalt, niobium, and tungsten among others; the US Department of Energy 2010 white paper “Critical Mineral Strategy” also acknowledged the strategic importance of these key components. In 1980, Pentagon documents acknowledged shortages of cobalt, titanium, chromium, tantalum, beryllium, and nickel. The US Congressional Budget Office’s 1982 report “Cobalt: Policy Options for a Strategic Mineral” notes that cobalt alloys are critical to the aerospace and weapons industries and that 64 per cent of the world’s cobalt reserves lay in the Katanga Copper Belt, running from southeastern Congo into northern Zambia.

Orwellian “Eavesdropping on a Worldwide Scale”: United Nations asks for Control over the World’s Internet

20121207-181902.jpg
Members of the United Nation’s International Telecommunications Union (ITU) have agreed to work towards implementing a standard for the Internet that would allow for eavesdropping on a worldwide scale

RT for Global Research

At a conference in Dubai this week, the ITU members decided to adopt the Y.2770 standard for deep packet inspection, a top-secret proposal by way of China that will allow telecom companies across the world to more easily dig through data passed across the Web.

According to the UN, implementing deep-packet inspection, or DPI, on such a global scale will allow authorities to more easily detect the transferring and sharing of copyrighted materials and other protected files by finding a way for administrators to analyze the payload of online transmissions, not just the header data that is normally identified and interpreted.

“It is standard procedure to route packets based on their headers, after all it is the part of the packet that contains information on the packet’s intended destination,” writes The Inquirer’s Lawrence Lati, “but by inspecting the contents of each packet ISPs, governments and anyone else can look at sensitive data. While users can mitigate risks by encrypting data, given enough resources encryption can be foiled.”

Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist widely regarded as the ‘Father of the Internet,’ spoke out against proposed DPI implementation on such a grandiose scale during an address earlier this year at the World Wide Web Consortium.

“Somebody clamps a deep packet inspection thing on your cable which reads every packet and reassembles the web pages, cataloguing them against your name, address and telephone number either to be given to the government when they ask for it or to be sold to the highest bidder – that’s a really serious breach of privacy,” he said.

Blogger Arthur Herman writes this week for Fox News online that the goal of the delegates at the ITU “is to grab control of the World Wide Web away from the United States, and hand it to a UN body of bureaucrats.”

“It’ll be the biggest power grab in the UN’s history, as well as a perversion of its power,” he warns.

Struggle over the Middle East: Gas Ranks First

[ Editor’s note: This article is also available in FrenchItalianArabicGermanRussianSpanish ]

by Imad Fawzi Shueibi (April 17th 2012)

The media and military attack against Syria is directly related to the global competition for energy, as explained by Professor Imad Shuebi in this masterful article. At a time when the euro area threatens to collapse, where an acute economic crisis has led the U.S. into a debt of up to 14 940 billion, and where their influence is dwindling in the face of the emerging BRICS powers, it becomes clear that the key to economic success and political domination lies mainly in the control of the energy source of the century: gas. It is because she is at the heart of the most colossal gas reserves in the world that Syria is being targeted. The wars of the last century were fought for oil, but a new era has dawned, that of wars for gas.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, Russians began to feel that the struggle for armament has exhausted them, especially in the absence of the necessary energy sources needed by any industrial country. The American presence in the oil zones for some decades enabled them to grow and have control over the international political decision without much struggle. Therefore, the Russians turned towards energy sources, be them oil or gas. Since the international apportionment does not bear much competition in oil sectors, Moscow sought to manipulate gas in the areas of gas production, transporting or marketing on a large scale.

The starting point was in 1995 when Putin set the strategy of Gasprom Co. to move within the area in which gas exists starting from Russia through Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Iran (for marketing) and the Middle East. Certainly, the projects of the Nord Stream and South Stream will be a historical order of merit/insignia given to Vladimir Putin for his efforts in bringing Russia back to the International arena and for tightening the grip on the European economy which will depend, for decades, on gas as an alternative for oil or depend on gas as well as oil, yet with prioritizing the first; i.e., gas. At this point, it was a must for Washington to hasten to create its peer project; Nabucco, to compete against the Russian project as to gain an international apportionment on the basis of which the next century will be politically and strategically determined. HSBC: The World’s Dirtiest Bank

HSBC in London

By Dean Henderson, LEFT HOOK

(excerpted from Chapter 2: Hong Kong Shanghaied: Big Oil & Their Bankers…)

In July 2011, First Niagara Financial Group announced that it would buy 195 retail bank branches in New York and Connecticut from HSBC for around $1 billion. [1] HSBC had acquired the branches when it bought the spooky Marine Midland in 1980. According to Global Finance, the UK-headquartered HSBC Holdings is the world’s 3rd largest bank with $2.36 trillion in assets. [2] Formerly known as Hong Kong Shanghai Bank Corporation, HSBC has served as the world’s #1 drug money laundry since its inception as a repository for British Crown opium proceeds accrued during the Chinese Opium Wars. During the Vietnam War HSBC laundered CIA heroin proceeds.

In Saigon the opium junta which Lucien Conein and Ed Lansdale had installed instructed the South Vietnamese military to dole out heroin to Chinese Triad syndicates who moved it to Hong Kong. The CIA’s Thai Generals used the same Chui Chao Triads as mafia kingpin Santos Trafficante. The Thais often sent morphine to Hong Kong, which was refined into heroin by the Hong Kong police. [3]

Deak & Company was the major gold dealer in Hong Kong and its operations were crucial to the CIA guns for heroin trade. Founded by OSS operative Nicholas Deak, it became the largest currency and gold trader in the US after WWII. Deak financed CIA adventures in Vietnam, the Mossadegh coup in Iran and the CIA’s assassination of nationalist Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba in the Congo. Deak used a Swiss subsidiary, Foreign Commerce Bank of Zurich, and its US Deak Perera branch to lure flight capital from wealthy Third World elites, mainly cocaine money from Argentina. When Deak suddenly went bankrupt in 1985, its Hong Kong depositors were left in the lurch. [4]

Final Conflict 2012? Engineering World War III

20121001-191750.jpg

By Adrian SALBUCHI, NewDawn magazine

In today’s increasingly interdependent and interactive world, every action has a myriad of causes, meanings, objectives and reactions; many visible, many invisible. Some, openly admitted and declared; others no one would dare confess.

When trying to come to grips with the many complex conflicts going on in the world and the dizzying pace at which they transpire, it would be a mistake to approach them in isolation. Only a “holistic” bird’s eye view gives us the picture of where we are and, more importantly, whereto we are being dragged.

21st century geopolitics cannot be understood applying a silo mentality. Syria’s civil war, Egypt’s “Arab Spring,” the destruction of Libya and Iraq, growing China, crippled Japan, the Eurozone crisis, America’s “missile shield” in Poland, Iran’s nuclear program, the coming Latin American “Spring…” Approached haphazardly, the picture we get is one of utter chaos. Approached applying the right model of interpretation, we begin to see how things interrelate, react and move in obedience to extremely powerful and dynamic – albeit, mostly invisible – forces silently driving today’s world.

Riots Over Rotten Apple Mania

By James Hall, The Intel Hub

You may know someone who is part of the rampage. It could be a neighbor or even a family member. Even in some circumstance, you yourself might be part of the wow rage. No, we are not talking about dunking for apples or eating from the forbidden fruit.

This riot is all about living a virtual life in the ether zone of personal numbness, disguised in the appearance of being cool.

Life without an iPhone to these cutting end “Efficiency Experts” is not worth living. This is the new economy and progress dictates that connecting to the world of texting is the most important function of daily existence.

So when the reports appeared that China Apple factory riot: Foxconn workers riot suspends work at facility, the main concern for Apple devotees is the risk of a delivery delay of their newest toy.

“The company that makes Apple’s iPhones suspended production at a factory in China on Monday after a brawl by as many as 2,000 employees at a dormitory injured 40 people.”

Little empathy for the hordes of workers laboring in confined opulence. The globalist model of manufacturing provides an advance version of “benign neglect” for all the willing slaves that assemble the latest in personal communication instruments.

Production resumes quickly and the threat of ‘Mass suicide’ protest at Apple manufacturer Foxconn factory, evaporates as the tech world avoids their latest threat to digital nirvana.

“Around 150 Chinese workers at Foxconn, the world’s largest electronics manufacturer, threatened to commit suicide by leaping from their factory roof in protest at their working conditions.”

Apple fanatics are a breed to themselves. Cost of the products is insignificant, when viewed within the doctrinal scriptures of the computer cult that enables, Apple to become most profitable company ever.

“In CY12, we believe Apple is poised to generate the highest annual net income of any publicly traded company ever,” White wrote.

“On average, we estimate Apple’s net income in CY12 will be over 6x higher than the three tech companies on an individual basis (when at a $500 billion market cap) or 1.9x the aggregate profit of these three companies combined. When including all five companies, we estimate Apple’s net income in CY12 will be 4x higher than the average.”

The obvious outlay savings of using overseas companies like Foxconn to frame the components and build the products is duplicated by most manufactures.

So, the huge success that Apple enjoys rests not solely on squeezing out the greatest productivity at the lowest expenditure, but is realized by selling at the highest mark up to the widest rabid consumer market, possible.

In a fairytale economic analysis of business enterprise, one might conclude that the consumer reveres innovation and jazz more than competitive pricing and extensive open source applications.

The facts, when viewed by a balanced and well-adjusted, technology user, concludes that Apple products are purchased more for style and craving than for utilitarian function and value. Furthermore, the Apple customer, emotionally invested in a brand as a badge of self-worth, cannot be denied.

The psychological desires of buying Apple devices has more to do with making a statement of technological superiority as a reflection of the purchaser’s transcendency from mere mortals.

With a little effort, observing the crowds in an Apple store reveals the traits and behavior of a sect of society that incorporates a value system that is often at odds with the majority of the population.

Liberalism is a common mindset of Apple users. While this same bias exists with most left coast marketing programs of other tech companies, Apple is notable for their counterculture presentations.

The irony of the1984 Apple’s Macintosh Commercial, satirizes the totalitarian world view, while the 2012 Apple business prototype exemplifies the very essence of the surveillance society. Liberation of personal computing does not survive in a cloud.

Russia says no to no-fly zone over Syria

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov (file photo)

Russia has rejected a call to establish a Libya-like no-fly zone over Syria proposed by the United States and its allies.

PressTV

“We repeatedly pointed out… the counter-productiveness of various unilateral steps… like proposals about the creation of… humanitarian corridors and safety zones,” Xinhua quoted Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov as saying in Moscow on Friday.

“These ideas have not been supported by the international humanitarian organizations working in Syria. These dubious ideas are not needed,” he added.

Gatilov made the remarks hours after the Western-led Friends of Syria group met in Paris and called for the establishment of a no-fly zone over Syria.

During the meeting, which Russia and China boycotted, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton accused Moscow of “holding up progress” in efforts to resolve the crisis in Syria.
But Gatilov called Clinton’s remarks “inappropriate” and said that her statement contradicts the agreement reached by the major powers in Geneva the previous weekend.

“We have heard this numerous times before, but we are concerned that these types of remarks go against the final declaration of the Geneva meeting (on June 30), which was adopted with the participation of the US secretary of state,” he stated.

New Pentagon Intelligence Agency to Spy on Iran, China

[ In a recent article ] The New York Times newspaper reported that the Pentagon is revamping its spy operations to focus on high-priority targets like Iran and China in a reorganization that reflects a shift away from the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan.

The new Defense Clandestine Service would make use of existing agents, authorities and assets and work closely with the Central Intelligence Agency to track ‘emerging threats’, the newspaper said late Monday.

“It will thicken our coverage across the board,” it quoted a senior defense department official as saying.

Case officers from the Defense Intelligence Agency already secretly gather intelligence outside of conventional battle zones, the Times said, and the latest move further cements cooperation between the military and the CIA.

The new intelligence service is expected to grow “from several hundred to several more hundred” agents in the coming years by shifting personnel and funding from existing assignments, the Times quoted the official as saying.
