Forces loyal to the Assad regime fire on rebel troops in Aleppo

Our writer was given exclusive access to the Assad Generals accused of war crimes as they seek to defeat the rebels in Aleppo

Mortars crashed into the middle-class streets around us and a T-72 tank baked in the heat under a road viaduct, but Bashar al-Assad’s most senior operational commander in Aleppo – a 53-year-old Major-General with 33 years in the military and two bullet wounds from last month’s battles in Damascus – claims he can “clean” the whole province of Aleppo from “terrorists” in 20 days. Now that is quite a boast, especially in the Saif el-Dowla suburb of the city, where sniper fire snapped down leafy streets. For the battle of Aleppo is far from over.

But this was a strange sensation, to sit in a private house, commandeered by the Syrian army – 19th-century prints still on the walls, the carpet immaculate – and talk to the Generals accused by Western leaders of being war criminals. I was, so to speak, in “the lair of the enemy”, but the immensely tall, balding General – his officers adding their own impressions whenever they were asked – had much to say about the war they are fighting and the contempt with which they regard their enemies. They were “mice”, the General said – he would not give his name. “They snipe at us and then they run and hide and in the sewers. Foreigners, Turks, Chechens, Afghans, Libyans, Sudanese.” And Syrians, I said. “Yes, Syrians too, but smugglers and criminals,” he said.

I asked about the rebels’ weapons and the clutch of conscripts staggered into the room under the weight of rockets, rifles, ammunition and explosives. “Take this,” the General said, grinning as he handed me a two-way radio, a Hongda-made HD668 taken two days ago off a dead Turkish fighter in Saif al-Dowla a few hundred metres from where we were sitting. “Mohamed, do you hear me?” the radio demanded. “Abul Hassan, did you hear?” The Syrian officers roared with laughter at the disembodied voice of their enemy, perhaps in the same block of buildings. We took this ID from the “terrorist”, the General said. “Citizen of the Turkish Republic” was printed on the card, above a photo of a man with a thin moustache. Born – Bingol (Turkey) 1 July 1974. Plot to turn Aleppo into Benghazi II

File photo shows Syrian armed opposition in the city of Aleppo in northern Syria.

By Mohyeddin Sajedi

In Syria’s northern city of Umm al Amud, large pictures of the imprisoned founder and leader of the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK), Abdullah Ocalan, are hung alongside flags of the armed separatist rebels.

Life goes on and the governmental offices are open.

The city is exemplary of the Kurdish region in the north of Syria which stretches from the Iraqi border in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the West.

Roughly one year ago, the official Syrian Army voluntarily abandoned this region. The Kobane, Al-Qamishli, Afrin, and Al-Malikiyah (Dayrik) regions have fallen into the hands of Kurdish Syrians, who are affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Union Party and support Ocalan.

One of the most important tasks of this group is to obstruct the progress of armed opposition groups called the “Free Syrian Army” or the armed gangs opposed to President Bashar al-Assad. Multiple efforts by these groups to infiltrate the Kurdish regions have met with resistance from the Syrian Democratic Union Party.  Continue reading

President al-Assad : Syrian Army Trustee of People’s Values against Terrorist Gangs

President Bashar Al Assad

DAMASCUS, (SANA) – Syria’s battle with the enemy takes multiple forms and clear goals as it determines the destiny of our people and nation, underscored President Bashar al-Assad, Commander -in-Chief of the Syrian Army and Armed Forces.

In a written speech to the Syrian army on the 67 anniversary of the Army Foundation Day, President al-Assad asserted that the enemy exploited internal agents as a bridge to destabilize the homeland, undermine the citizens’ safety and drain our economic and scientific capabilities with the aim of weakening us and preventing us from drawing up our future and improving our society to the level of the developed countries.

Syrian People Stood As One Man Against Schemes

President al-Assad pointed out that the enemies wanted to prevent our people from their national decision but they were surprised by the Syrian people who stood as one man against their schemes and defeated them, leading them to look for a way out of their defeats, plot more schemes and assign the task of carrying out such schemes to local agents.

The President added that the Syrian people have foiled all these schemes and dropped all bets on influencing their awareness and proved that they cannot be subjugated.

President Bashar al-Assad greeted the Syrian army who defends the homeland’s sovereignty and the nation’s dignity and hailed the Syrian army’s struggle for more than half a century which has prominent role in preserving the nation’s identity and its cultural, social and intellectual components.

President al-Assad went on addressing the Syrian army: “You wrote the greatest epic of heroism and pride and proved through facing the war waged against our country and confronting the criminal terrorist gangs that your are the entrusted with the values of our people to whom you belong and faithful to their history and civilization,” asserting that the Syrian army and armed forces personnel would ever remain the title for such authentic belonging.”

Citizens Derive Strength From Soldiers who Devote Themselves to Defend The Country

President al-Assad added “You represent the aspiration of our people in defending their dignity and honor and restoring stability and security of the homeland due to your determination to implement your sacred duty towards the homeland,” asserting that each citizen derives his strength from our soldiers as they are the men who devoted themselves to defend the country by land, sea and air.

The President called on the armed forces for more readiness and continued preparations to remain the armor and fortress of the homeland, voicing his big confidence in our armed forces, seen by the Syrians as the source of their pride and the defender of their legitimate causes.

President al-Assad greeted the spirits of our martyrs who sacrifice their souls for defending their homeland and the families of the martyrs, wishing the wounded quick recovery.
