Iran Decodes US Drone Intel

EHRAN (FNA)- Senior Iranian military officials announced that the country’s experts have decoded the intelligence gathering system and memory hard discs of the United States’ highly advanced RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft that was downed by Iran in December after violating the country’s airspace.

Speaking to FNA, Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Forces Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh revealed some data taken from the aircraft’s intelligence system to discourage his counterparts in Pentagon who had alleged that Iranians would not succeed in decoding the spy drone’s memory and intelligence devices.

“This plane is seen as a national capital for us and our words should not disclose all the information that we have very easily.”

“Yet, I provide four cues in here to let the Americans know how deep we could penetrate into (the intelligence systems and devices of) this drone,” he added.

Hajizadeh stated that the drone parts had been transferred to California for technical works in October 2010, adding that the drone was later transferred to Kandahar, Afghanistan in November 2010 and had a flight in there.  Continue reading

Cheney: Obama Should Have Attacked Iran to Destroy Drone

Appearing on CNN, former vice president Dick Cheney told Erin Burnett that Obama should have attacked Iran and destroyed the high-tech CIA spy drone the Iranians brought down.

“The right response to that would have been to go in immediately after it had gone down and destroy it. You can do that from the air. You can do that with a quick airstrike, and in effect make it impossible for them to benefit from having captured that drone,” Cheney says at the 4:00 minute mark in the video below.

Can you imagine a scenario where a Chinese drone is brought down over North Dakota by the U.S. military and the Chinese send in a strike force to destroy it and in the process kill U.S. military personnel in possession of the drone?

It would correctly be viewed as an act of war.

Iran military downs US spy drone

An American RQ-170 Sentinel unmanned reconnaissance aircraft

A senior Iranian military official says Iran’s Army has downed a remote-controlled reconnaissance drone operated by the US military in the eastern part of the country.

The informed source said on Sunday that the Iranian Army’s electronic warfare unit successfully targeted the US-built RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft after it crossed into Iranian airspace over the border with neighboring Afghanistan. He added that the US reconnaissance drone has been seized with minimum damage.

The RQ-170 is an unmanned stealth aircraft designed and developed by the Lockheed Martin Company.
The US military and the CIA use the drone to launch missile strikes in Afghanistan and in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region.

The unnamed Iranian military official added that “due to the clear border violation, the operational and electronic measures taken by the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Armed Forces against invading aircraft will not remain limited to Iran’s borders.”
However, NATO forces say operators lost control of a surveillance drone flying over Afghanistan last week that may be the same one Iran says it has downed.

“The UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] to which the Iranians are referring may be a US unarmed reconnaissance aircraft that had been flying a mission over western Afghanistan late last week. The operators of the UAV lost control of the aircraft and had been working to determine its status,” the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement.
The statement about the UAV was issued in Kabul on Sunday and released to reporters covering an international conference on Afghanistan in Bonn, Germany.

The incident comes as the United States has beefed up its military presence in and around the Persian Gulf region in recent months in the wake of a popular uprising in Bahrain.

The US Department of Defense says Washington is closely monitoring developments in Bahrain, which hosts the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, where 4,200 US military personnel are based.
